I was born and raised in San Juan Puerto Rico. On the third day of my freshman year of college, Hurricane Maria landed in Puerto Rico and devastated the island completely, leading to 4,000 deaths and trillions in infrastructure damage. I was sent to Florida to live with my extended family for the remainder of my college career. I attended Eastern Florida State College for my first year, and then transferred to the University of South Florida where I spent the remaining three years of my college career and attained my Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences.
I have completed my first year of medical school at Ponce Health Science University, one of the best schools in my country and it has been one of the best years of my life. I am training at UCSF as part of an NIDDK summer research program for medical students. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and will take advantage of every moment that I have at this world-class University.
